Theft - Operation Meadows

Operation Meadows was a simple theft from offices within a small organisation.  Following consultation with the client, it was established that the most cost effective and proactive means to catch the offender was to install a covert camera within the premises.

  • A covert camera was installed in a smoke alarm with a view across the office from where thefts had previously taken place
  • No persons other than the Director and the Facilities Manager were aware of the existence of the camera.  The camera had the facility to record 24 hours per day, seven days per week
  • Money was then planted in three different drawers with the serial numbers being marked. Within three days the offender was seen to enter two drawers, remove cash from the drawers and place it in their pocket and leave

The member of staff concerned was a long serving and trusted member of the workforce.  The evidence was retrieved from the recording device and a discipline process began with the employee.  As a result, the individual was dismissed.

This is how a simple theft issue can be dealt with via a covert camera.  Of interest here is the fact that there are no breaches of human rights and no infringements to any individual's privacy. The issue is cost effective and ensures all employees that thefts will not be tolerated and that they can feel safe as honest employees working in an environment without the finger of suspicion being pointed at them.
